There’s no “trick” to staying healthy and looking young; it’s a lifestyle. To stay healthy and look your best, it’s important to make lifestyle changes. But the good news? It’s possible with recovery!
Why does recovery matter so much? Dr. Anthony Lyssy explains:
“During the stress created by a workout, complex reactions use energy to create waste, just as a car uses fuel as energy to power the engine and creates exhaust as a byproduct. Just like our cars, we have to get rid of the toxins and metabolic byproducts that are produced while working out, otherwise it will bog down our engines and create unwanted side effects like soreness, stiffness, inflammation, and ultimately impair the healing that creates the positive adaptation you are striving for. Inflammation and oxidation can be considered “rust” inside your body. Just like if you leave a rake in the yard or a car sits too long and rusts build up, this impairs its function. Proper care of these tools and machines prevent rust. The same thing can happen in our body and this is why incorporating the right kind of recovery is so imperative.”
Here’s what we know: your body’s ability to recover and perform at its healthiest happens when you have a structured plan that includes nutrition, sleep, stretching, and inflammation control.
Here are the 4 things to consider for your plan:
- Sleep. This one’s simple: sleep better, live better. If you’re not getting 7-8 hours of HIGH QUALITY restorative sleep, you’re simply not able to recover properly.
- Nutrition. Nutrition is absolutely imperative, but unfortunately gets the wrong kind of attention. While many recommendations can be customized based on your health and fitness goals, it’s important that nutrition is considered a cornerstone of your wellness practice. In general, eat good clean food from nature without labels that haven’t been processed and packaged. Dr. Lyssy encourages patients to shop around the perimeter of the grocery store where things have to be kept cold and aren’t processed and packaged. His 3 tips for optimal nutrition:
- Make 70% of your food intake high-quality micronutrient-rich vegetables.
- Avoid processed and refined carbohydrates and keep gluten-containing starches and sugars at an absolute minimum if not cut out completely.
- Don’t be afraid of fats. Incorporate lots of healthy fats for optimal energy metabolism, optimal brain health, and the leanest bodies we could ask for!
- Exercise. Avoid falling into the trap of the “one size fits all” workout or recovery plans. Partner up with a medical professional or a facility that has a medical advisor who is actively involved in their protocols and create a plan meant just for you! Incorporate proper medical lab testing to ensure all metabolic processes are running optimally and create a guided plan of action that addresses movement, nutrition and regeneration.
- Recovery. Adding recovery modalities like cryotherapy or NovoTHOR can help give your body the extra boost it needs to be healthier. Recover more quickly, feel better, and have a better overall sense of well-being.
